The Koala Preservation Society of N.S.W. Inc. is a group of volunteers committed to the welfare and preservation of wild koalas. Its work is totally reliant on donations. The Society was formed in 1973. The objects of the Society
are :
The Society operates the Koala Hospital in Macquarie Nature Reserve in Lord Street, Port Macquarie, where up to 90 koalas have been cared for at any one time. During the bushfires near Port Macquarie in 1994, 89 koalas were rescued and treated at the Hospital. Between 150 and 200 koalas are treated at the hospital each year. They are mostly from Port Macquarie but also come from the Taree, Great Lakes, Kempsey, Hunter, New England and Coffs Harbour areas. Very sick koalas are treated in the "Intensive Care Unit" in the John Williamson Wing of the Koala Hospital building. This wing was built using donations collected at country singer John Williamson's concerts and the proceeds from his song "Goodbye Blinky Bill". When the koalas have fully recovered, they are returned to their home range provided it has not been cleared for development. Tour groups and school groups are welcomed at the hospital, where they are given talks and provided with educational pamphlets. Members of the public are also welcome to visit the hospital all year round, 7 days a week, to see the koalas being fed and treated. Feeding times are 7.30 am and 3.00 pm daily.
