Disconnects are normally caused by line noise (measured in
decibels) which causes transmission errors. Modems have a pre-set decibel range that they
can operate within.
Above 40 decibels the modem (either end) may drop the call. The
normal solution is to slow the modem speed. See Modem Settings
and 56k modem problems.
You can also check the following to see if they are causing the
problem:
1. How far away do you live from local Telstra Exchange?
The resistance in the copper in your phone line increases as the line length increases.
If you are more than five kms away this may cause the modems signals to deteriorate.
If you think it is causing the problem, ask Telstra to test your lines.
2. Are there any old Telstra T200 phones, answering machines or fax machines on the
same line?
If so, disconnect them.
3. Are there any electrical interference near your phone lines? E.g. fans, power tools,
TV, fridge, etc.
If so try and eliminate them
4. Are the double adapters connecting to the modem damaged?
If so replace them.
5.Are the connecting wires to the modem damaged?
If so replace them.
6.Have you got "Call Waiting" facilities on your telephone? If so, disable it.
